One pricing trap worth naming: Bonsai's cheapest tier (Basic, ~$15/mo as of September 2026) does not include invoicing, contracts, or proposals. The plan a working freelancer actually needs is Essentials, so budget ~$25/mo, not $15. And it's priced per seat, which solo operators can ignore and small studios can't. HoneyBook has no free tier at all; both offer 7-day trials, so the cheapest research is an afternoon in each.

Choose Bonsai if…

Your bottleneck is the unbilled gap between "we should work together" and money arriving. Bonsai's whole point is shrinking proposal-to-e-sign-to-invoice into one pipe you don't think about.
You sell expertise, not an experience: consulting, development, design, writing. It's the back office in our consultant stack and our developer stack for exactly this reason.
You want expense and income tracking in the same tool so tax season is an export, not an archaeology dig.

Skip both if: you have an accountant and a standalone e-sign tool and the combination already works. These platforms earn their fee by replacing four tools; if you only need one replaced, $230 to $350 a year is a lot of subscription for a nicer invoice. Which is cheaper, Bonsai or HoneyBook?

Bonsai, but by less than we used to say. Its Essentials plan runs about $25 a month, or roughly $19 paid annually. HoneyBook's Starter plan is $29 a month whether you pay monthly or yearly, down from the $39 monthly rate we published in July. On annual billing the gap is now about $10 a month rather than $20. Prices were verified in September 2026, so confirm on the vendor pages before you buy.
