Fathom vs Otter: different jobs, not rivals

Full transparency, and it changed this week. We previously published that Fathom had declined our application. They accepted us on 2026-08-10, we were three days late noticing, and the tracking link went live on 2026-08-13. So the Fathom link now pays us and the Otter link does not. Every word of the verdict below was written when we believed Fathom would never pay us a cent, and none of it has moved. The advice below was identical when we expected to earn from both. How we stay honest.

The framing everyone gets wrong: these two get compared as interchangeable "AI notetakers," and they aren't. Fathom is built around meetings you host: it joins the call, and its output is a decision-and-action-item summary you forward. Otter is built around audio as material: live transcription you can watch mid-call, imported recordings, interviews you'll quote from. Pick by which sentence describes your week, and the choice usually makes itself.

Common questions

Is Fathom actually free?

Yes. Fathom has a genuinely usable free tier, with Premium at $20 a month month to month, or $16 a month billed annually, if you need more.

Which is cheaper, Fathom or Otter?

Fathom's free tier costs nothing, which beats any paid plan on price alone. Among paid plans, Otter is about $8.33 a month billed annually, against $16 for Fathom Premium on the same billing basis, or $20 month to month.

Do I need permission to record a meeting?

Yes, and that obligation is on you rather than the tool. Two-party consent states and GDPR both apply regardless of how good the summary is. One sentence at the top of the call handles it.
