First, the bar both tools clear: both sign Business Associate Agreements. That already puts them ahead of every consumer transcription tool, none of which belong within a mile of a therapy session; the full therapists stack covers that wall in detail. Client consent is required for either, in writing, every time.

The real difference is architecture, not features. Upheal wants to be where your sessions happen: HIPAA-compliant telehealth is built in, and notes, treatment plans, and analytics live on its platform. Blueprint wants to disappear into the setup you already have: it listens alongside whatever you use and pushes documentation into your existing EHR. You're settled in SimplePractice, TherapyNotes, Jane, or an agency EHR and the last thing you want is another platform. You want the note to appear where your workflow already is.
Your caseload is light or fluctuates, so paying per session beats a flat fee. You want to trial the category cheaply. Five free sessions alongside your EHR, or a 30-day trial of the all-in-one, is a real evaluation. Correction, September 2026: we previously described this as a permanent free Core tier. Blueprint's pricing page does not offer one today, and we could not confirm it ever survived past the trial, so we have removed that claim.
In-session and post-session clinical support prompts appeal to you more than practice analytics.

Are Upheal and Blueprint HIPAA compliant?

Both sign business associate agreements, which already puts them ahead of consumer transcription tools, none of which belong anywhere near a therapy session. Client consent is still required for either, in writing, every time.

Is Blueprint free?

Not after its trial. Blueprint charges $0.99 a session alongside your existing EHR, or $1.49 a session for its all-in-one EHR, after 5 free sessions or a 30-day trial. Upheal does have a free plan, but it is limited to notes from dictation, typed summaries and uploads for individual therapy, with no live session capture. Its paid notes plan is a flat $39 a month for unlimited sessions; the old $1-per-session plan capped at about $69 is no longer sold to new customers. At $0.99 a session, Blueprint costs less below roughly 39 sessions a month and Upheal costs less above it.
